# Create Embedding

POST https://api-gateway.merge.dev/v1/embeddings
Content-Type: application/json

Create text embeddings.

Returns vector representations of the input text.

## Authentication

- `Authorization` header (bearer token, required) — Your production key sent as a bearer token.

## Request

### Body (application/json)

This endpoint expects an EmbeddingRequestSchema.

- `model` (string, required) — Model ID in format 'provider/model-name'
- `input` (EmbeddingRequestSchemaInput, required) — Text to embed
- `encoding_format` (string, optional, nullable) — Encoding format for embeddings
- `dimensions` (integer, optional, nullable) — Number of dimensions for the output embeddings. Supported by OpenAI text-embedding-3 and later models and by Google gemini embedding models.
- `task_type` (string, optional, nullable) — Google-only: the embedding task type (e.g. RETRIEVAL_QUERY, RETRIEVAL_DOCUMENT, SEMANTIC_SIMILARITY, CLASSIFICATION, CLUSTERING). Ignored for non-Google models.
- `user` (string, optional, nullable) — End-user identifier
- `vendor` (string, optional, nullable) — Pin the vendor that runs this request.
- `customer` (string, optional, nullable) — Customer ID (UUID) to scope this request to, applying that customer's routing policy, provider keys, budget, and usage attribution.

### EmbeddingUsage

Token usage for embeddings.

- `prompt_tokens` (integer, required)
- `total_tokens` (integer, required)
- `cost` (double, optional, nullable) — Cost of this call in USD, computed by Gateway. Null when the embedding model has no pricing on file, so cost trackers record no spend rather than a false zero.

### ValidationError

Single field-level validation error. `loc` is the JSON path to the offending field, `msg` is a human-readable explanation, and `type` is a stable machine-readable error code.
